Notes: Spiced Licorice, Wood, Earth, Damp Stone
Myrrh is the aromatic oleoresin of a number of small, thorny tree species, which grow in dry, stony soil. An oleoresin is a natural blend of an essential oil and a resin, and if you are familiar with our medicinal grade frankincense, you already have become acquainted with oleoresins. Oleoresins essentially “bleed” from the tree, and often the trees are wounded to harvest the resin. The resin hardens quickly, and at that point is ready for use; be it for burning, extraction, or ingestion (for medicinal purposes).
Oudimentary’s Yemeni myrrh is a fine example of this famed scent from the ages of the spice trade route. Since biblical times the scents and spices from Arabia were the stuff of legend, and myrh holds a special place as one of the most coveted of all the imports from Arabia. Greek historian, Diodorus Siculus, once so eloquently stated, “All of Arabia exudes a most delicate fragrance; even the seamen passing by Arabia can smell the strong fragrance that gives health and vigor.”
Oudimentary’s Select Grade Myrrh is from the species Commiphora myrrha, and hails from Yemen. Our supplier flatly stated that it was some of the nicest myrrh he had ever seen, and we have no reason not to believe him. This batch has beautiful almost jewel-like dark brown pieces, and scent notes include spiced licorice, wood, earth, damp stone, with a slight underlying sweetness. Lovely, and nice to pair together with some of our frankincense.
