Myrrh is the aromatic oleoresin of a number of small, thorny tree species, which grow in dry, stony soil. An oleoresin is a natural blend of an essential oil and a resin, and if you are familiar with our medicinal grade frankincense, you already have become acquainted with oleoresins. Oleoresins essentially “bleed” from the tree, and often the trees are wounded to harvest the resin. The resin hardens quickly, and at that point is ready for use; be it for burning, extraction, or ingestion (for medicinal purposes).
Oudimentary’s Yemeni myrrh is a fine example of this famed scent from the ages of the spice trade route. Since biblical times the scents and spices from Arabia were the stuff of legend, and myrh holds a special place as one of the most coveted of all the imports from Arabia. Greek historian, Diodorus Siculus, once so eloquently stated, “All of Arabia exudes a most delicate fragrance; even the seamen passing by Arabia can smell the strong fragrance that gives health and vigor.”
Oudimentary’s Select Grade Myrrh is from the species Commiphora myrrha, and hails from Yemen. Our supplier flatly stated that it was some of the nicest myrrh he had ever seen, and we have no reason not to believe him. This batch has beautiful almost jewel-like dark brown pieces, and scent notes include spiced licorice, wood, earth, damp stone, with a slight underlying sweetness. Lovely, and nice to pair together with some of our frankincense.

Super Assam is the pinnacle of a classic Indian oud wood with a rich, rustic spice that puts it in a class of it's own. Top note hints of balsamic vinegar and leather hover over barnyard basenotes, giving way to a dark cholcoate dry down. We sourced this treasure from suppliers who live and distill oud oil in the famed North-Easternmost Indian state of Assam.
Oudimentary sources this oud wood from a supplier native to the Assam region. He divides his time between South East Asia and Assam, overseeing his farms, from which this oud wood is harvested. On our last visit with him, he presented this oud wood, saying that there was finally a farm-raised oud wood thatoffered a complex scent profile similar to other Assam wild oud woods. These are smaller pieces with an impressive amount of resin. Notes include cinnamon, chicory, roasted hazelnut, and burnt sugar amongst others. Not too sweet, as is common with Indian oud woods, but a lovely scent profile which is great for fumigation.
Super Cambodi is a classic oud oil with bold undertones of sweet wood, musk, and fresh tobacco. The dry down offers hints of fruit, cork, leather, and molasses and carries a syrupy smokiness akin to that found in burnable raw oud wood.
Tarakan Island is located off the coast of East Kalimantan in Indonesia close to the Malaysian border. The majority of the island is covered in mangrove swamps, which happen to be prime growing ground for gaharu. Some of the most unrivaled Indonesian woods and oils come from the wild-harvested trees from Tarakan, and in our indomitable search for the finest oils in the world, Oudimentary unearthed a lovely batch for your pleasure at a mid-range price.
Tarakan oils have less sweet notes than our Cambodi and Thai oils. Think along the lines of a morning walk through the rainforests of Borneo—as you walk, dew drips, birds call, and the shade of the jungle trees invites you. Continuing on, you smell a fresh, distinct sharpness, which slowly gives way to deeper jungle air, earth and organic life. As you become more aware of your surroundings, notes of pine and herbs begin to manifest. Long lasting, unique.
In this particular batch, sharp, brilliant top notes give way to a green, woody bouquet. Available in limited quantities!
We are proud to present our first Vietnamese oil in over 5 years, Vietnam Super. This limited edition release is a fantastic starter for the uninitiated in oils from this beautiful S.E. Asian country.
With a scent profile common to Southern Vietnam, our Vietnam Super offers sharp top notes that give way to warm green/earthy base-notes reminiscent of fresh cut oak, sweetgrass, and fresh rain, which last for several hours. Next think burning firewood and smoldering campfire caught by your nose on a crisp Autumn evening. The dry down rounds out and a slight whiff of sweetness begins to emerge. Medium sillage. Stunning and a great daily wearer.
