Kyoto is one of my favorite cities for many reasons, but what stands out is her ability to merge the old and the new so gracefully, offering us permission to venture beyond the bounds of “either or”. My first visit to Kyoto, Japan was in the winter. The air was brisk and the energy quiet and calm, but now and again a whiff of incense lingering in different spaces brought a wave of warmth. I traveled while traveling, thrust into the fumigation-rich memory land of my childhood, my inner disciple committing to learn more about the art and tradition of Japanese incense.
Kyoto became a yearly perfume pilgrimage of learning, collaboration and sourcing. Similar to the Path, we sat with masters trying to absorb and then hope what we received from their scent tradition, dances beautifully with ours. Kyoto Soul is my most serious attempt at this yet.
